Simon Cowell revisit

I fixed that hand! I think it looks a lot better than the previous version, if still not quite perfect. (click the image for more detail)

Eva Longoria sketch (with video)

I usually draw men, purely because they're easier! So I've decided to try and alternate between men and women to get more practice, and so I get to stare at photos of beautiful women for hours on end, without that guilty feeling. So here's the first, Eva Longoria of Desperate Housewives fame. I also recorded the process, which you can see below. I'm always reluctant to record my sketching because I worry that it won't turn out well, but I guess I can always delete the video if I don't like it. Let me know if you enjoy this one, and I'll do more.

Simon Cowell final

Here's my final painting of Simon Cowell, which I started AGES ago! Click for a closer look. This was lots of fun to paint, but I'm glad to be finished.

Simon Cowell update

Here's a more finished sketch of Simon Cowell, I'm going to start painting tomorrow. Any comments are welcome.

Oprah

Been so busy with editorial cartooning, haven't made the time to work on caricature. Thought I'd better change that, so here's a rough rendering of Oprah. This will be full color when completed, hopefully by the end of the weekend. This ended up being an amalgamation of about three different references.

You'll notice I took Jason's lead (from his blog postings) to put a copyright notice on the image. More artists seem to be doing this, likely due to the pending Orphan Works Bill. Whether the threat is real or not, never hurts to slap a copyright on Internet stuff, I guess.

As always, critiques are welcome.

Simon Cowell sketch

Here's a quick 15 minute sketch for my next portfolio piece - Simon Cowell from Britain's Got Talent / American Idol. This was just going to be a quick thumbnail to test out exaggeration, but I liked where it was going so I stuck with it, and I think I'll use it as a starting point for the painting. Any comments are welcome.

My final at last

I finally got around to finishing this, I made quite a lot of changes in the end, but pretty pleased with how it turned out. It's already been said a lot, but this course was amazing, and I've really enjoyed seeing everyone's progress. I'll look forward to seeing where we all take it from here.

From Hell's Kitchen...

Well, bar crits, I'm calling this done for now. Great to hear feedback if anyone has them.

I don't know why I would want to paint such a puggish man - but doing so will always remind me to work and be passionate about the creative side of myself. Yes, it's only a show, but hey, it's a fun watch!

Oh and if you haven't jumped on board Jason's course, seriously think about it!! I wouldn't have dreamt to finsh such a piece to this quality and with this speed a few months ago!

And continuing on...

Eeeeerr, this'll be a test, guess who? Anyway there was something missing in my life and I realised it was the weekly assignment from Jason. Gee I'll miss that course.

I think I'll take this one beyond sketch form.

Bend it in Black and White

Hope everyone recognises who this is - I can't believe how different a caricature looks from sketch to final painting! Unlike my first colour assignment, I've been inspired by everyone else to do the wash colour method, so here is my black and white version.

After a pretty rough couple of weeks I'm gonna be trying to fly home on fire! Looking forward in hearing everyone's thoughts before I begin the colour.

...And More Bruce!

Hey guys this is my submission. I decided on a blue green dominant and a red and orange split (something like that it escapes me now). It was alot of fun and I love how everyone interprets this guy. He was difficult!

Bruce Willis Painting

Here's my 'final'. Not really finished but I'm out of time, I'll have to finish it off at a later date. I used the direct painting method, with red-orange, green and blue as my split complementary palette. Let me know what you think.

Lesson 4 - Monochromatic of Matthew

Hey guys, been doing this one for awhile and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Dudes got an eye that almost pops out of his head! Sometimes I felt the level of the eyes were too exageratted, but I kept it in there to emphasise that one eye! Keep 'em coming everyone! All looking fantatic

My first two weeks of Caricature

Hi guys, I've finally gotten around to posting up what I've been upto here at Schoolism. I have, ofcourse, signed up for Jason Seiler's Caricature course and I'm absolutely loving it. It may sound strange , but it's a good sign while your working, you see somebody's face and think to yourself "hmmm..squashy head". :D

Jason's already critiqued these and I've yet to fix them up. Definately by the end of it though, I'll make sure I've corrected them...maybe even improved them!! We'll see how it all goes. Hope to see everyone posting their progress as well!

The Art of Caricature with Jason Seiler

Caricature Class with Jason Seiler
Course Description: By the end of this course, master caricaturist, Jason Seiler, will have you looking at people in a whole new way! Over nine lessons, Jason will teach you through streaming lectures and one-on-one correspondence most of his personal techniques on how to maximize the effects of exaggeration and distortion when drawing faces and more importantly, how to push the truth of a subject's features without losing his or her likeness. In this course, you will draw a LOT because that is the best way to learn the importance of constant practice and to understand your subject. Your assignments will involve drawing lots of thumbnails, sketching lots of average, everyday people, and finally, doing full-color caricatures of public figures. For illustrators seeking to add high-end caricaturing to their repertoire, this course is a must!

Lessons: 9 lessons in 9weeks
Fees: $898 USD
