Now that were not under the pressure to paint super detailed, lets see how the youre sketches are going. Incidentally, now that Ive discovered value painting, I never want to shade with a pencil again. So I think Im going to try a value painting of Bannon since I just cant get his face without shadows.

Assignment 5: Bruce

It took me a while to finish Mr. Bruce's coat (whew), but I think it turned out pretty OK.

I can't believe all the talent in this class. Everyone's work is really good and it's fun to watch it getting better.

I chose a screen shot out of the 5th Element for my Bruce painting because I liked how the director treated color in that movie. I thought it would be cool to try and mimic that with the limited pallet. It proved to be tougher than I thought and I totally ran out of time. I feel like it's about half way done.

Whew, this was tough to get done on time. The colors are a bit off, but it was fun to paint. I hope everyone is having as much fun as I am.

Assignment 5

It's not very funny or exaggerated, but I did spend a good amount of time painting. Hopefully next assignment I will focus more on the caricature part...

I've finished, or rather, abandoned my Bruce picture, as I'm getting tired of looking at his mugshot, which I'm starting to dream about!

I lengthened the nose to mouth distance from my values picture, which I think gives more caricature.

On to the next assignment.

I didnt realize how hard it is to mix colors till I started painting. Even if I were to do this monochromatic it would be difficult to figure out how to adjust the saturation against the value. This is probably going to turn out like a 7 year olds watercolor painting.

Caricature Lesson 5 -- Bruce Willis

Here is my rough for Brucie. I will start painting tomorrow... hope I can get it done by Monday. Gonna be a hectic yet creative weekend, I am supposed to be auditioning for a new band on Sunday. Wheeeee!

I have only just finished my values picture of Bruce Willis, I'm not sure about his back teeth. Is he chewing gum? I did him chewing gum anyway!

Only 48hrs until the deadline. Am I worried? Sure!

Assignment 4: Kathy

This is my final version of Ms. Kathy. Lesson 5 is really starting to work me GOOD. Hope that I can get Bruce finished on time.

Assignment 4

Here's my painting of the beardman. I should have pushed some of his features more, it's not very caricaturish... but I learned a good amount about digital painting on this assignment...

Finally final...

Here is my beardman final. This was a tough assignment and I spent a week in frustration trying to get this dude done. He looks more like a Turkish sultan now than a hippie biker. My first attempt was a 3/4 view and it was an utter disaster. I'm not very happy with this one either... I keep finding little things to niggle over and it'll never seem done to me, but I had to get it uploaded. In retrospect, I may have had an easier time with Kathy (her face was really fun to sketch), but nooooo... I had to do the hard one. Oh, well, that which does not kill me makes me stronger.

Next week is going to be even more 'fun'. I think I will do a value painting of Bruce to get more practice and then colorize him.

As you can see Ive gone full portraity, and didnt try to exagerate at all. I thought it was more important to show that Im in control of values rather than ruin the picture by trying to do values that arent really there. Im working on doing thumbnails and hopefully by the end of the course I will get some exagerated caricatures in.

Caricature - Lesson 4

Wow, this was a fun assignment. I'm not sure how I'll get lesson 5 done on time though, this one took a while!

I was a little skeptical starting out with my thumbnails on how this would turn out, but things really came together in the end.

I can't wait to see everyone's work on these!

I've just signed up for the blog, so I figured I should put something up.

Just finished this,I think it's too cartoony with hindsight, but I enjoyed doing it, and its too late now to do it again anyway!

I'm really enjoying seeing other folks work on the course, it's just like being in an art class. (which is what it is of course)

I've no more time to stand and stare, Assignment 5's already there! (made that one up myself)

any thoughts on lesson 5?

I just watched lesson 5 and it looks like things are getting pretty technical. If anyone has any thoughts or experiences on choosing a palate, I'll be curious to hear it

painting progression on the bearded one...

Here's my progression of the painting portion so far. I'm enjoying this one. There's obviously a lot to be done. I'm glad we've had a good while to work on this week's assignment.

I spent more time on this than I wanted to, but at least it's finished. On to the next one!

Beardman progression

Here's my progression so far of the Beardman. The thumbnails are the same as I posted earlier. I added emphasis on what was going on after the thumbnails. I really liked how #1 turned out and almost started fleshing that out to paint but something was bothering me. I didn't really like how his face was kind of tall and skinny and pinched in. It was more straight than I wanted. Then I sketched out a side view and I liked it but I'm really set on doing a 3/4. In doing the side though, I realized how angled his face was so I tried to push that and sketched #3. I started to see how it could be angled even more so I pushed it further in #4 and even started out drawing inside a rhombus like the one you see there. I also liked how his face was giving off a "stair step" effect so I tried to incorporate that into the caricature. I sketched on top of #4 to get the final sketch on the right. There are still a few issues I need to work on. Also, the more I try to get it to look like the actual person, the more it leaves caricature and goes into portraiture. I still like it more than #1 though which I almost settled on.

*sigh*

I am working on lesson 4 for Jason's class and am not pleased with how things are coming out... I'm just in the thumbnail and sketching phase and am still unsure...

Kathy was the most fun to draw, although a bit of a struggle also. I think I have the most likeness with her, though.



I'm pretty certain I am not working on Matthew... he's got a great face but I don't think I am capturing the character much.

Right now I am leaning towards the beardman, I had the least trouble with him (the likeness isn't there yet, I was more focusing on structure).

Beardman sketches

I'm glad to be contributing this blog. I've been watching what's going on here for months and it's actually what made me decide to take Jason's class. I feel like I have improved a ton already. Here are some sketches for week 4. I chose the Beardman because after seeing the last class' work it seemed like most everyone else chose the other two references and I didn't want to be influenced by those. I'm having trouble exaggerating the features and I tend to border on portraiture. I know that I really need to push more in the very loose thumbnail stage.

Still working on this one. Since values have always been my biggest challenge, I'm going with the grayscale rendering and then color afterward. She's a very tough caricature in my opinion. Reference photos are tough because she has different hair in every one as well as different weight and different levels of airbrushing by whomever took the photo. Hopefully I'm getting the likeness, here.

As usual...any critique is welcomed.
